Career Planning

Career planning is a multi-step process that involves a great deal of research.  It takes time and dedication.  It is a process that involves learning about yourself, thinking hard about what you really want, and learning about the occupations you are considering.  Here is a link to a website that contains some interesting information on choosing a career.

If you are not sure about your career path after high school, you may want to begin with our  Finding Your Path article below.   After following the steps there, you may wish to discuss your results with the Career Counselor at your school.  There are MANY career resources available online.  Get started with Career Path Resources (below) for tons more information.

Finding Your Path

The guide that follows is designed to help you career plan and set some goals.  Be patient and willing to spend some time on this project!  

Step #1

Plan your education and career path:

  • www.myblueprint.ca (Ask at your Career Centre for an activation key, then create your account)
  • enter current grade; then next
  • enter student education number; date of birth; then next
  • enter a valid email address
  • enter a password and create an account
  • access your email account to verify your email address (this will be your login name for myBlueprint)
  • To complete the assessments, click on "Who Am I" in the menu box on the left.  Complete the surveys one by one to learn more about yourself and careers that match your  responses.
  • Start exploring occupations in myBlueprint!  You will find lots of information on the careers that interest you, including duties, wage and salary, working conditions, educational requirements, employment outlook and so on. 


Step #2

Complete further Career and Personality Quizzes - a variety of self inventories may give you more insight into careers that might be suitable to you based on your character, skills, values and interests.

    Under My Careers, click on "Take the Career Quiz"
  • www.alis.gov.ab.ca Click on Planning Your Career, then CAREERInsite.  Complete the Know Yourself quiz

 

Step #3

1. Take your results from Step #2 and go to:

www.myblueprint.ca

  • In the left menu bar, click Work, Occupations
  • Search by title by typing the occupation name from step 2 into the search bar

OR go to:

www.alis.gov.ab.ca

  • Click 'Plan Your Career'
  • Click 'OCCinfo" (green menu bar on right)
  • Click 'Explore"
  • Search by title using the list of options you received in Step #2: type the occupation into the search bar or search alphabetically

Each occupation title will list information about educational requirements, details about duties, working conditions, wage and salary ranges, employment outlook, advances and certificate requirements.

2.  For those considering a trade login to:

www.tradesecrets.alberta.ca

  • Open 'Trades and Occupations'
  • Click 'Trades and Occupations List'
  • all trades are listed alphabetically from A to Z.
  • each is linked to a description of duties, working conditions, skills and abilities needed, and much more

 

Step #4

Research the Post Secondary Institution that your program is offered at by:

  • Attending an Open House (see Calendar for some dates and check the sites of institutions of interest to you)
  • Exploring their website
  • Phone: Ask for an Academic Advisor
  • Email
  • Check for such programs as Student for a Day etc.
  • Speak with representatives when they have displays in the Common Area


 

Step #5

Start Researching Scholarships

  • Use the resources and information available to you on the WCPS site
  • Receive scholarship deadline reminders by texting @ lchscc to 587-333-2739
